Before It's Gone is a practical guide for anyone who wants to research and preserve the history of their own community before it disappears.
The book walks readers through ten essential primary sources, from census and vital records to land deeds, probate files, church registers, newspapers, city directories, military records, photographs, and oral histories, showing exactly what each source is, where to find it, and how to read it.
Each chapter is built around true stories and closes with a hands-on "Try This Today" exercise, so readers finish not just informed but equipped to start their own research trail.
No academic background required, just curiosity and the willingness to spend an afternoon in a courthouse basement.
AUTHOR BIO
Anthony Clemons is a public historian, author, and the founder of The Historian Syndicate and Greysteel Press. Combining an extensive background in history, education, archival research, and data analytics, he is dedicated to community-driven historical preservation and empowering a new wave of public historians. An Army veteran and a graduate of Columbia University and Goucher College, he brings a unique, interdisciplinary lens to uncovering and sharing local history.
